Hair Transplant Aftercare

Most times we read all the hype and information leading to our decisions to get a hair transplant procedure done and finally resolve any issues with our appearance or overall baldness.

But once you do your research, pick a doctor, and have the surgery done, then what? We don’t typically hear about aftercare, or “what’s next.”

The most important thing to keep in mind after your surgery is that you will not look in the mirror and magically see a full head of healthy hair. Depending on each person, it can take around 4-8 months to really start to see the growth and benefits of the surgery.

Some scabs and swelling will occur after the surgery, but should be normal (always talk to your doctor about what you should expect).

It should also be noted that gentle hair washing of the scalp is OK on the second day, but you should be following steps provided by your doctor around how to properly rinse and run water on the scalp after surgery. Protecting fresh grafts from trauma will help insure a successful transplant.

After 10 days have passed, you will have the sutures removed and you can then have your hair cut if you please but coloring should be put off for about 5-6 weeks.

Other typical recommendations also include advice to not take blood thinners or drink alcohol up to 3 days after the surgery and not engage in heavy exercise.

While these are only some general rules, keep in mind that they are not the same for everyone’s condition and the only one who can accurately detail what you should do after your hair transplant surgery is your doctor, so always ask questions and get answers beforehand.
