Trick or Treat: Don’t Pull Your Hair Out

Terrifying, frightening, afraid – all these words describe the season (Happy Halloween!) – and they also relate to the feelings you can develop if you find hair loss is happening to you.

While it’s true that all of us shed our locks on a daily basis as a part of natural hair growth and health – just how much hair we’re losing from our heads can be a sign that we’re on the path to going bald or needing a hair transplant.

What is normal? Put it this way, if you start to notice clumps or patches of hair in your brush or on your pillow and you are starting to see your scalp in areas that are thinning – its time to think about what might be happening, and what hair loss treatment options are available.

The first thing you should do is think about how you’re treating not only your hair but also your scalp. Are you using the right shampoos? Are you being careful not to tug at the roots with the brush or with hair ties? Tight braids can damage the hair follicle resulting in hair loss due to the traction it causes on the scalp.

What kind of products are you using on your hair? If you’ve been into the heavy gel, hair spiked look – chances are you may be clogging up your pores and not allowing the follicle to breathe properly. That can also cause hair loss, so be cautious of the things you put in your hair and the tools (especially hot ones) you use on your hair when styling it. Many coloring agents are very damaging to the hair and hair follicles so watch out for products that contain harsh chemicals.

Even if you’re doing all of these things right, and you still notice your hair is falling out, and you have ruled out any possible health-related issues, then heredity may be the culprit. If that’s the case there is little you can do to prevent hair from falling – but there is still hope. Hair transplant surgery is one way people who are suffering from hair loss are regaining their self esteem. The surgical procedure removes healthy hair follicles from a donor area of the scalp and transplants them to problem areas of the scalp, so that hair will once again grow naturally in that location. If your hair loss is genetic then the transplanted follicles will grow permanent hair that is not effected by the cause hereditary hair loss.

Don’t be afraid. Whatever the hair fear – there is always something you can do to improve matters. Always consult a physician that is well versed in hair loss and if you are considering a transplant search for an established clinic. Most hair transplant clinics offer free consultations, so it costs nothing to get a personal evaluation with recommendations for treatment.
